More than 200 new jobs are coming to Bristol

MORE than 200 new jobs will be created by expansion plans at two separate Bristol companies.

Insurance firm LV and the Cooperative legal services team both announced their recruitment plans yesterday, bringing some light to the economic gloom.

Both companies have offices in Aztec West.

Insurance and pension firm LV already employs more than 500 people in Bristol.

The new jobs will be created by an expansion of its customer services division.

The company said it is currently recruiting 50 new staff and has plans to recruit even more people later in the year.

Human resources director David Smith said: "LV is going through a period of significant growth so it's a very exciting time to join us.

"While other financial companies in the Bristol area are freezing recruitment and making cut-backs we are expanding, so this not only means that there is the opportunity to join us but also lots of great career prospects."

The Cooperative Legal Services has announced it is looking to appoint up to 150 new people in Bristol in the coming year.

CLS managing director Eddie Ryan said: "We have ambitious plans for our business and we want people with ambitions to match.

"The Legal Services Act will change the way in which legal services are delivered in England and Wales and we are going to be playing a leading role in the new era.

"We believe that the presence of the Cooperative's trusted brand and values together with a combination of first class products and services will provide customers with greater accessibility to legal advice and better value for money."

The announcements came on the same day that thousands more job losses were announced in the UK's banking sector.

Around 3,500 jobs will be cut at Royal Bank of Scotland over the next three years under plans to shrink its investment banking arm, while RBS subsidiary Ulster Bank plans to cut 950 jobs and Barclays is to axe more than 400 posts at its technology and infrastructure division.

None of the redundancies announced yesterday is believed to include any jobs in the Bristol area.
